Cleaning your fur coat professionally will help prolong its life.

Cleaning fur coats is one of the most challenging parts of owning your fur coat. You can’t just throw it in your washing machine or send it to your regular dry cleaners. Because furs require careful cleaning, it may be tempting not to clean it at all in hopes that no one will notice. However, to ensure the longevity of the fur, it is important to make sure you clean it properly, which often involves professional cleaning by a furrier.

Make sure you inspect your fur on a regular basis. If anything is spilled on your fur, spot clean your fur coat as soon as possible. This will keep the liquid from becoming permanently stained or absorbing too much of the liquid. Soak up the liquid by patting the area dry and use a gentle cleaner to remove any residue left behind. Anything more than this must be done by a furrier.

When you take your fur coats in to a furrier to be cleaned, they will complete the process in several steps. Most of these steps are ones
you can’t take in your own home, which makes a professional cleaning necessary. Once all spots are removed, the coat will be tumbled with sawdust, walnut shells or pumice, along with a cleaning solution. After this process, the coat is tumbled and vacuumed to remove the saw dust or other small particles.

After this process, the fur coat is steamed to remove any excess saw dust or other materials from the coat. This is followed by a process
called glazing, which is the equivalent of ironing the fur coat. This will help ensure that the coat is back in its desired shape and helps stand the hair back up instead of lying flat as it may do because of the process it undergoes for cleaning. Once the coat is clean, it is inspected again to ensure there is no damage that needs repair or any remaining spots.

Fur coats are difficult to maintain on your own. You often need the help of a professional for tasks, such as cleaning and storage. While
you can try to keep your fur clean so it won’t need regular cleanings, you may miss a spot or still run into issues. The longevity of fur coats relies heavily upon the care they receive. Therefore, if you want your fur coat to last a long time, you need to resign yourself to having it professionally cleaned on a regular basis.
