Learn how to get your furs ready for winter.

Like it or not, winter is quickly approaching. The weather is getting colder and many areas of the country have already seen snow. This means it won’t be long before it is time to bring out the fur coats. Before you start wearing your fur coat, there are a few things you should do to get ready to wear it.

Get It Out of Storage

If you put your coat into fur storage for the winter, it is time to get it out. In most cases, all you need to do is call your furrier and request to pick up your coat. The furrier will make sure your coat is removed from storage and ready for you when you come to pick it up. This is the easiest part of the process.

Check for Repairs

In most cases, your furrier will check your fur coats over before putting them in storage and then clean them so your coats are ready to go when you pick them up. However, sometimes problems may be missed. Once you pick your coat up from the furrier, complete your own inspection to determine if any repairs need to be made. If you don’t make the repairs when you notice them and wear your coat with rips or other damage, that damage can quickly become worse. Sometimes it can’t be repaired at all.

Make Room for Your Coats

Fur coats require specific storage conditions, even when you keep them at home during the winter months. Make sure you have a soft, padded hanger for your coat so that it doesn’t become damaged or misshapen as it hangs in your closet. It is also important to make sure your coats have plenty of breathing room. Jamming your coats into a packed closet is going to cause serious damage that can often not be repaired.

Before you wear your fur coats for the winter, there are a few things you need to do to prepare. Making sure your coat is in pristine shape will allow you to enjoy it for the entire season. As soon as you get it out of storage, you need to be ready to wear it and store it in your home. If there is damage that goes unnoticed, you may have to give your coat over to your furrier right when you need to start wearing it, leaving you without your luxurious coat.
