Fur Coats
Proper care of fur coats at home increases longevity.

Fur coats require a certain amount of daily care. Most people are aware they need to put their fur coats into storage during the warmer months when they won’t be wearing them for a long period of time. However, it is important to make sure you are taking proper care of your fur coats while you have them home in the colder months. This will ensure your fur coats last for a long period of time.

Hanging Your Coat

Always hang your fur coats in a closet where it will have plenty of room to breathe. Never stuff it into a closet that doesn’t have enough room. Use a wooden hanger that is padded to prevent the shoulders of the coat from losing their shape. The hanger should also be large enough to keep the fur from touching the hanging rod. Never store fur coats in any type of garment bag. Fur coats need to breathe.

Watch Accessories

Some people like to decorate their coat with accessories. This is perfectly acceptable as long as you take precautions. Don’t leave jewelry pinned to the fur or you risk matting. Also avoid shoulder bags that can wear away the fur at the shoulder due to rubbing. Scarves are always a good idea because they protect your fur coats from the oils of your skin, as well as any makeup you may be wearing.

Avoid Chemicals

Women who wear fur coats are also women who often use hairspray and perfumes to further beautify themselves. If you are going to use these items, make sure you apply them before you put on fur coats. This will protect your fur coats from the chemicals, which can destroy the natural fur and leather. These items can also cause an unpleasant odor in your coat over time.

Remove Your Coat

It is never a good idea to sit on your coat for a long period of time. If you know you will be sitting, remove your coat and lay it gently over your lap instead. This will keep the fur from being crushed and protect the integrity of your coat.

Fur coats require specialized care. Even when you have your coat home for the winter months, you need to take care of it properly. This includes hanging it in an airy closet with the right type of hanger and plenty of space so the fur can breathe. You also need to take care with the accessories you use and perfume and hairspray you use. If you do everything you can to protect your coat, it will last that much longer.
