Fur Coats
Fur coats are meant to fit well instead of hanging loose.

Fur coats are meant to fit you differently than other coats. If you have a typical winter coat, it is likely big and bulky, not holding to your body shape at all. Fur coats are different, however. A fur coat is intended to fit snugly, giving you the fashionable look you are going for. Therefore, before you run out to buy a fur coat, it is important to know how to measure yourself so you can be sure to get the right size.

Length

When you are gauging the length of a fur coat, you will measure it from the base of the neck to the bottom of the hem. If the coat has a collar on it, you will not measure the collar. If you are trying to determine the length you want, measure from the base of your neck to the area where you want the coat to fall, such as your thighs or your ankles.

Sleeves

The length of the sleeves is also important. To gauge the length of the sleeves, measure from the neckline all the way to the cuff of the sleeve. To determine the proper length for you, measure from the base of the neck to your wrist to ensure you get the right size.

Back

You will also need to measure across your back. When you measure yourself, you will need to measure across your back from one side to the other at the underarm level but not including your arms. As you measure the coat, this measurement goes from one arm hole to the other on the inside of the coat.

Bust

As you measure your chest size, it is important to measure at the largest point. This will ensure the fur coats you buy will fit properly. A fur coat should be fitted but not tight. Taking this measurement more than once will ensure you get it right so you don’t have a coat that is too small for you.

Knowing how to measure yourself and fur coats will ensure you get a coat that fits you the way it is intended. While it is still important to try on your fur coat when you go to buy it and it may still require alterations, knowing what to measure and how can be useful. If you can go to see your furrier prepared, it will make the whole process go more smoothly so you can find the right coat for you quickly.
