Morris Kaye real fur coatThere’s a lot that goes into how to take care of real fur. Thanks to its natural origins and structure, it’s a very delicate piece of apparel and requires quite a bit of care to keep looking its best. Whether you’ve owned your particular coat or have recently received an older coat from someone else, you may have to look into getting it repaired at some point during its lifespan. You never want to leave this important job to just anyone! Fur repairs are best left to professionals or, if you have ample enough experience with sewing and fur care, your own hands. Here’s what you should know about repairing your real fur coat.

What Problems Typically Plague Fur?

Some problems are much more common than others and, in the grand scheme of how to take care of real fur, are quite minor. In fact, the typical problems you may run into your fur may feel quite similar to what happens to any other piece of clothing as it ages. Here are some issues you may face with your real fur coat, and how they can be resolved without professional intervention:

  • The hooks. Over time, the hooks may weaken and bend, necessitating a set of new hooks to be attached to the coat. Other times, the fur may simply enshare itself into the hooks. Both of these problems are fixable. You can simply either free the fur from the hooks through a bit of gentle fiddling or, in the case of the former issue, install the new hooks with a bit of needle and thread.

  • Tears. Fur is perhaps more prone to tears than other pieces of clothing. However, with the right know-how, they can also be repaired just as easily. It all depends on the location and size of the tear, as well as the age of the coat. If your real fur coat has long been on the road to decay, you may not want to fuss so much over having it repaired. If this isn’t the case, you can again use needle and thread to take care of it.

For Other Problems…

Unfortunately, not all fur-related issues can be solved with Googling and a sewing kit. In cases like this, it’s best to turn to the services of a professional fur repair service rather than trying to fix the problem on your own. While this option is often far more expensive than taking care of the issue at home, it will also prove worth it in the end. Remember: your fur coat is an investment! You owe it to yourself and your well-crafted coat to take only the best measures in caring for it so it will last as long as possible.
