A fur fashion program can teach the creation of real fur vests.
Students can learn how to create real fur vests in a fur fashion program.

While there are already plenty of options available for real fur coats, fur vests, fur accessories and more, there’s always room for new designers on the market. There are many people anxious to buy fur coats to show off their sense of style and enjoy the many benefits real fur can offer over coats and other outerwear made from synthetic materials. If you’re interested in getting involved in the fur industry, you’ll need to find a school that offers the training you need. The good news is fur design programs are being offered in some of the most prestigious design schools in Chicago.

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago

For those who are interested in art and design, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) is one of the top accredited private design institutions in the country. They are well known for their exquisite programs and experienced staff, giving students access to some of the best training in the field, regardless of the medium they choose. For those who are interested in designing real fur vests, fur coats and other fur accessories, this school is a great option. They offer undergraduate, graduate and post-baccalaureate programs.

In addition to everything the school has to offer, the city of Chicago is an amazing place for those who are interested in design. With all the resources available, including a variety of museums, students will be able to put into practice everything they learn in class and take advantage of all the other amenities this city has to offer. Chicago is culturally rich and offers a number of cultural amenities other cities just can’t offer.

Furs Are Making a Come Back

One of the reasons students may wish to attend SAIC to study design is to launch a lucrative career as a fur designer. While there was a period while animal rights activists were successful in driving people away from the fur industry, times are changing. People are realizing real fur accessories, fur coats and fur vests are eco-friendly and better at keeping individuals warm than other materials. Models and other celebrities are again sporting furs on the runway, which means popularity will surge. This means there will be an even greater demand for people who know how to create attractive designs with the fur medium.

A New Fur Program

While SAIC did not previously have a program created just for furriers, the school completed research and designed a program to train future furriers in the fine art of fur fashion design to ensure the market always has a fresh selection of real furs from which to choose. While the program is not yet active, 15 students have already registered for the classes, showing an interest in this budding industry. Even though fur fashion has been in existence for many years, it is experiencing a resurgence that ensures it will be a viable option for many years to come. SAIC is taking the next step toward preparing those who want to become involved in this area of design.

Local Support

The fur program at SAIC will succeed because it has plenty of local support to ensure students have all the resources they need to be successful in the field. They have sought out local fur craftspeople to help teach the classes and will be working with local fur companies to access materials and information to guide their students in learning the trade. Materials will come from ER Fur Trading Corp., a company that has its own line of furs, but also provides quality fur to many countries around the world. The Fur Information Council of America is also involved in developing and launching this new program. In fact, they are looking at all the possibilities and discussing options with other design schools around the country. They hope to introduce this program into many of the other prestigious design schools throughout the United States.

Whether you enjoy real fur coats, real fur vests, real fur accessories or anything in between, the ideas for each garment has to come from somewhere. While training for new designers was often completed by passing a trade through families or through apprenticeships, design schools, such as SAIC, are beginning to pick up fur fashions as part of their curriculum. Other schools are expected to follow in their footsteps.
